Photos of Le Lezard Rouge

stony desert

Le Lezard Rouge is an old train turned into a unique tourist experience. It travels on the line that serves the phosphate mines in the hills above Metlaoui in Southern Tunisia. These photos were taken in November, 2001.

(Above) The train travels across a flat stony desert before the climb into the hills. Approaching the mountains (Right).

The mountain crags have looked the same for generations.

Life clings to the sides of the spring-fed streams.

There are many tunnels on the line as the train winds its way up to the phosphate mining area.
