Welcome to Agrigento, Sicily on TravelSnapz |
Ancient columns - remnants of the old Greek temples at Agrigento. |
The so-called Valley of the Temples at Agrigento in Sicily is actually a ridge studded with some magnificent ancient Greek temples. At least the Greeks first established a settlement here but they were eventually over-run by the Romans, so there is probably a bit of Roman maintenance here too.In the late afternoon, the temples are silhouetted against the waning sky - it would be worthwhile waiting for the sunset. There are five main Doric temples along the ridge, some a bit more intact than others. Earthquakes and vandals have taken their toll on the site. There is a museum nearby, generally open in the mornings. |
